Under refurbishment during our stay which we weren’t advised about. I would have liked the opportunity to decide whether to defer my booking until renovations were complete or cancel it. Breakfast each morning to the sight and sound of builders outside and a strong smell of adhesive on our return to the room on an evening. Out of season so local restaurants and pubs closed until later in the week. This meant that we ate each evening in the restaurant. Attentive, professional restaurant team and unusually a good vegetarian choice. Room a little tired especially the bathroom. We had a room with balcony and there was a lot of noise from room above most nights. We have stayed a number of times and this was probably the most disappointing

called in for a drink on Mothers day into the bar, we stood at the bar for a while, even though no one else was waiting, the very miserable bar man, i think he was in charge of the bar, did not acknowledge us at all, then we were just about to walk out, when he decided to serve us, we were meeting friends at this hotel, he was abrupt, totally felt like we were intruding, and he did not once make us feel welcome, even though in your bar says welcome, can i just say the waiting staff were very polite, but it was the main man behind the bar that was so awful, no customer service what so ever, also he came over and started to spray and clean tables, without asking it went all over my hat and gloves, we left at that point, as i have asthma and felt it was so uncalled for, we called our four other friends and told them not too meet at this place, we went somewhere else which we were made most welcome...such a shame, one man can make you feel awful...no excuse for bad customer service, he should not work frontline with customers. you lost out on 6 lots of meals and drinks.

Superb food, view and great staff. We ate in the bar and in the restaurant and ate perfect meals every time. There are some interesting choices as well as staples and all were good value and presented beautifully. The hotel is perfectly situated. It's biggest asset is the amazing staff team. The people here remember you and take the time to make sure you enjoy your break. They love this hotel and are very proud of it's current upgrade works. We were here for our anniversary weekend, as we had a tiny wedding here a year ago. If you are planning an event here, Beverley will listen to you and help you to have exactly the celebration you want, however large or small. It's a little bit special, this hotel.

It’s great to see this old hotel restored to its former grandeur. We ate on Valentine’s night so we were presented with a special menu, their normal menu and a Wednesday night steak menu. We ate from the steak menu which was £55 for 2 steaks and a bottle of wine - amazing value and excellent steaks. We were welcomed with a smile on arrival and the friendly service continued throughout. We’ll definitely keep returning.

Our favourite hotel on the Yorkshire coast. Yesterday we (family of 5) called in just before midday for coffee and scones prior to walking the Cleveland Way back to Whitby. From the moment we stepped into the hotel we received a warm welcome from all the staff. The service and quality of the food and drink as expected was first class. Always the case here! Well done the Victoria! Special mention for one waiter - the smartestly dressed chap in North Yorkshire!

We have stayed at the Victoria a number of times before, and understand it is now under new ownership/management. We were warned in advance of the renovation and alteration works taking place, these did not really impact our stay apart from a small amount of noise from builders from around 8.30am. The gardens and terrace are being rebuilt, so not a great view there at present, but as the weather was atrocious we wouldn't have been going outside there anyway! We were on a short break winter deal, a standard room (you can pay a little more for an upgraded room). The deal included 2 nights stay B&B, dinner one night and an afternoon tea. We booked the hotel restaurant for the first night, I had asked for a table by the window (not thinking that it's February there fore dark!) and mentioned that it was my birthday. The room was clean and reasonably spacious for a standard room, looked out over the road, part view of the bay and front of hotel to the car park opposite (we had to park there as hotel car park was being resurfaced). All amenities you'd expect like tea & coffee tray, and the lovely young chap on reception showed us to the room & offered to carry our bags up. Dinner was very pleasant, the wait staff were lovely, friendly and gave advice on our choices (husband was warned in advance that the mussels portion was quite large for a starter). Food came quickly, and was hot and tasty and beautifully presented. I was very touched when they brought out a plate iced with "happy birthday" and 2 little pieces of brownie with a candle in each - and the waitress ladies then sang happy birthday to me! Breakfast was a buffet and you order your choice of hot food at the table. Everything from Full English to Eggs Benedict, which husband enjoyed. We watched the rain/sleet/snow and the poor builders outside in it all! We had the afternoon tea on the afternoon we left, all beautifully made and presented (not sure about the jam & cream presented in earthenware willow pattern teacups - perhaps a little bowl or dish would look nicer?) We could not manage to eat it all, so they packed the rest into a box for us to take home. All in all, a very enjoyable stay, with friendly helpful and chatty staff which always makes a difference. I did fill in a feedback form, but be aware that there are no lights actually on the steps up to the main entrance door, and in dark rainy conditions I found it hard to see where I was putting my feet. The lobby and hallway have been recently redecorated, so we were told, but they do need extra lighting as it seems quite dark, and again with stairs and a dark patterned carpet and low light, I had to watch my step. As someone with restricted mobility I knew there was no lift, and stairs to the rooms, but a handrail on both sides might help in places. I also did not know there was an accessible loo until just before we left when a staff member pointed it out in reception - the loos in the bar mean more steps!

Lovely hotel. Very friendly welcome. Room neat and tidy with plenty of storage and a shower that you don't need a manual to operate. The food was excellent. On a bed, breakfast and diner deal and we could choose from either of the menus. Kippers for breakfast :)

Beautiful bar, a few dining/drinking areas. Gorgeous orengey room with stunning view towards the bay. Our friends we’re staying over night and had afternoon tea which looked delicious. We had light lunch from the starter menu. My husband had soup of the day. I had tempura vegetables that came with a gorgeous dip. I have several food intolerances and I had plenty of choice on the menu without the need to change. Plenty of gluten free and dairy free options including a combination of both. Service was great.

I stay quite often, mostly alone but sometimes with my grandson. Love this hotel, the staff, the views, the food and the rooms are all first class! I’m always welcomed so nicely & feel very much at home. The range of wines is really good and the menu has something for everyone to eat.

We have been visiting the Victoria for many years staying in the hotel, calling for a drink and dinning in the bar and restaurant when we have come for day or rented cottages. We have taken advantage of the winter 3 for 2 on many occasions. Arriving on this visit was, as always, like coming home. We were warmly greeted by the wonderful team we’ve come to know over the years. I’d read they have new owners and whilst we were there a group of people were about the place pointing at things and holding up swatches and obviously planning for future changes. Whilst I’m not averse to change and recognise there are some areas getting a little tired I do hope they don’t spoil our happy place. I’ve only scored an average this time because we were a bit disappointed with dinner in the Orangery. Breakfast was excellent as always, the service at all times first class but the actual food at dinner, we felt, was not up to our past experience and expectations. It felt like they were trying to be fine dinning but not achieving the quality. I do enjoy fine dinning and have eaten in several highly acclaimed establishments. My expectation of dinner at the Victoria being good quality, well cooked food and a changing menu of local ingredients at reasonable prices. I felt I paid over the odds for average food - particularly disappointed with the over priced scallop starter which felt like it had just come out of the freezer section at Lidl! We will be back because it’s very special to us. I do hope the new owners retain the wonderful team and make any changes sympathetically. I feel they should look at the food and decide what they want to achieve as at the moment, in my opinion, it’s feeling a bit like frozen gastro food from a supermarket.
