The Hotel Portmeirion is a romantic seaside resort on the coast of Snowdonia in Wales. It was opened by Clough Williams-Ellis in 1926. Noel Coward wrote Blithe Spirit here in 1941. Patrick McGoohan filmed The Prisoner here in 1966-67. In early September Portmeirion hosts Festival No6, a unique celebration of arts and music. Access during the festival period is for Festival Ticket Holders only. Portmeirion is open every day all year and is suitable for all ages.
Show more...I’m not going to explain all about Portmeirion, what, where and how, or about The Prisoner TV series. You’ll need to look it up. I will say that it’s well worth a visit. Staying here can be a bit confusing as there are several ways to stay. In the Main Hotel itself, or in one of the Village rooms, or at Deudraeth Castle. The village rooms are all in different buildings and it’s quite difficult to really see what the differences are until you actually get there. Some have sea views, others have village views. Some have allocated parking almost at the door, some have parking a few minutes walk away. We were in the Bridge House with a village view and parking very nearby. Portmeirion is not a cheap place to stay, and the rooms reflect that. Very well appointed and stylish. Coffee pod machine, kettle, fridge, slippers, dressing gown (which you can buy). Champagne and wines in the room are clearly priced and reasonable. My only issue was quite audible footsteps from the room above, but not for long and not too late at night. Rooms are in line with a hotel at this level. Most of the rates include dinner & breakfast. A major reason for staying here is the hotel restaurant. It is also possible to eat at the castle, but this is not what we chose to do so no comment or opinion. The dinner option is described as TDH (Table D’Hote). Please do not think that this is some cheap thrown together 3 courser. It is amazingly good. It seems to change daily and I would say is heading into Michelin star territory. There is also the option of a tasting menu at additional cost. The wine list is quite very serious but with something for everyone ranging from mid £20 or so up to many hundreds per bottle including some rarities. It’s tempting to run up quite a wine bill! Service is efficient, however there was a distinct lack of personality, with the exception of (?John Mundy) who injected some character and humour into the dining experience. I don’t expect a comedian, but a bit of personality goes down well. However, dinner here is an occasion, and a big part of the reason for staying. Day visitors to the village have to pay an entrance fee, but residents don’t. It’s easy to spend a day wandering around the village, but there are also some nice walks. Once there you won’t need to drive anywhere. The village is quite hilly, but there are electric buggies with drivers that I think are available for those with mobility problems (check this). We were there for two nights and could easilly have stayed longer, if only for the food! A real treat.
Show more...Third year staying at hotel portmeirion and it remains a highlight of the year with wonderful food and amazing location. Staff are friendly and helpful. The history is interesting and the village itself worth looking around
Show more...We've stayed at Portmeirion several times now - it's unique and gorgeous. We stayed again in Telford's Tower, which overlooks the central square. This time the rain meant we couldn't enjoy the terrace but it is a great space even in inclement weather for a couple or more even so. What a view! Combined with friendly and professional service throughout. The cherry on top is the superb (Michelin-quality IMO) Mark Threadgill steered restaurant.
Show more...We stayed in the peacock Suite as it was a special birthday! All the staff Reception, Porters, Bar staff, and all in the hotel dining room were excellent, as indeed was all the food and cocktails! Hope to be back again soon!
Show more...We had a great time celebrating my wife's birthday at PM and booked the amazing Telford Tower. The original booking process online was quite difficult, but once we made contact over the phone with Diane the trip was well and truly sorted. Diane was fantastic and very patient when trying to arrange the best deal to celebrate the surprise birthday treat. Once booked we received useful pre-visit information and guidance. The trip from South East Wales to PM was spectacular, especially for my step-son's Australian born wife, who was amazed at the countryside and especially the mountains and sheep!! Upon arrival we were quickly booked in and a porter was arranged to show us to our accommodation. Telford Tower was brilliant, very clean, modern, warm and welcoming. The view from the Tower into the village will remain in the memory as spectacular. After a 4 hour journey over mountain passes and offten single track roads, we were all ready to shower before setting off for our fine dining experience. Sadly there was not enough hot water and only the ladies were able to shower. This disappointment was immediately shared with reception and over the course of the next few days various reasons were offered as to why there was not enough hot water. These included possible plumbing issues to the rest of the village all taking a shower at the same time and therefore exhausting all the supply. To be fair, the service charge was taken off as compensation when we departed. However, we didn't even realise that there was a variable daily service charge costing between £30-£35. Perhaps this is a learning opportunity for me to read the small print and for PM to make this clear as part of the booking process. We had booked the bubbles, dinner, bed and breakfast package and thought it represented excellent value. The food in the hotel was described as fine dining and this clearly met the brief! It was delicious and filling. The service was attentive and excellent. The only disappointing note was that there was a birthday card on the table for my wife. Sadly the hotel got her name completely wrong and although we laughed it off, it was poor. Breakfast was also excellent and we can thoroughly recommend eggs benedict. Overall we had a great time and would thoroughly recommend staying in the village. Just be weary of taking a shower between 6-7pm as there is a chance that there may not be enough hot water!!
Show more...Fabulous stay. The food in the hotel was perfect as were the staff. Lovely to wander around the grounds as a staying guest. Our room in the village was very clean and comfortable. Lost a mark for noisy plumbing issue from next door room , otherwise perfect! Look forward to a revisit.
Show more...We stayed for one night in one of the village rooms. Wasn't that busy this time of year, and it closes a 5pm anyway so it's only the people staying in the various accommodation and staff that are there. So it is very peaceful. Breakfast was excellent, all the staff made you feel welcome. Postcards can be sent from the hotel reception with a portmerion postmark. It was just being away from modern life that made it for us.
Show more...We come every year for a few nights on the DB&Bubbles offer. This year had to cut back to staying 3 nights as £££ has gone up again but it is still incredibly good value. We have other accommodation to pay for too as it is too far to travel all in one day. Food and accommodation were amazing as ever. Weather was not the best but it did not spoil our 3 nights stay. Got upgraded to the accommodation we stayed on our Honeymoon was just made it even more magical. Portmeirion we never tire or get bored of visiting you. Be seeing you next year. XXX
Show more...We recently stayed at Portmeirion in one of the Village Rooms, close to the Hotel. The spacious room was lovely, with a sitting room and separate bed and bathrooms. There was also a small room with a large wardrobe and kitchenette (sink, mini-fridge, kettle etc.) Everything was spotlessly clean, the bed was extremely comfortable and the room was warm and cosy. There were lovely views over the estuary. All the staff were friendly, welcoming and professional throughout our stay. They got the balance perfectly right between being helpful yet discreet. They made an effort to understand our needs at all times. They were on-the ball and focussed on the job. I have dietary needs which are not always easy to cater for and the staff never made me feel awkward or a nuisance. They genuinely cared that we both had a great experience. They went over and above any other restaurant I have ever visited, in ensuring I received the same delicious culinary experience as any other diner. This is the first time I have enjoyed a meal at a restaurant and not had to sit by hungry, watching others enjoying themselves whilst I felt miserable. Not only was the service wonderful but the food was superb. We could not fault it. Delicious, interesting, fresh, perfectly cooked. The breakfast was also excellent. The dining room itself is charming, there was a great atmosphere and the chairs were really comfortable. It is a wonderful place to stay and there are lovely walks from the door once you have explored the Village. This is a very special place and we will definitely be back, many times!
