Depressing area with the people wallowing in the past and their 'Free Derry' the city is free and in general a very nice place but this part of the city is depressing the people need to look forward not always backwards and wallowing in their one sided view of history. Rest of the city is lovely and feels more european with lovely cafes etc

When we visited here we frankly felt intimidated by the thugs roaming the area trying to sell us the idea that hey were tour guides. The "monument" itself is just a shabby whitewashed wall which is claimed to be historic. We felt it was a waste of time to go to see this edifice and it was better to see the better attractions in Londonderry such the historic city walls, the Apprentice boys museum and the Guildhall.

This whole area had a terribly oppressive atmosphere. You feel constantly under surveillance- every curtain seems to have someone sitting behind it, looking out as you pass. The angry looks from gangs of youths passing by don't help either. This area and the monuments around must bring back the pain of past events every day to those unfortunate enough to have to live here. I can't imagine how miserable they must be to be constantly reminded of past injustices- little wonder that the residents seem so angry. Demolish the whole place and move on.

We were not treated well by the younger people in Derry. They yelled hateful things (at older people), spit on a visitor, and glared at you all the time. We became afraid to walk around on a lovely summer evening.

Although of recent historical interest, we found this area of Londonderry intimidating and frightening. It is very sad that today's generation cannot get over their history and learn to get along with each other. We are A-political and realise that both sides in the troubles did terrible things. But surely it is time for the sake of future generations for all sides to stop aggravating each other. We found the people of Derry to be marvellous, kind and helpful and they have so much scope for future tourism, as shown when we also visitted there during the City of Culture year, it was fantastic. So put the murals in a museum if you must where those who choose to look at them can but for your own sakes remove them and stop intimidating those who wish to enjoy your beautiful city in ALL AREAS and spend the holiday money with you!

It's lovely to see the murals and get reminded of the history of the area however don't forget this is an area people still live in and can be dangerous. When we visited my girlfriend got hit in the eye by a stone thrown by a local kid and we spent the rest of our day in the hospital getting bits of broken sunglasses out of her eye. Be safe and cautious.

overrated. Not much to see here. Much else to see in Derry. The murals are OK. I wouldn't go out of my way for this one.

We were fortunate to have Martin McCrossan as our guide for our walking tour of Derry--particularly the Free Derry area. Having lived through "The Troubles," Martin's story was very moving and informative. The huge murals in the area brought the history to life and Martin's explanation of the healing that has ongoing through the years was very encouraging. Not sure about seeing the area on your own.much would be missedbut seeing it through the eyes of someone who lived it was remarkable.

The famous sign had a banner over "Free Derry" with big black capital letters- all very neatly done- saying EXTINCTION. Obviously pasted up by environmentalists. There were also many IRA recruiting posters in between the official famous dozen or so murals. One gets the sense that the battle for acceptance/equality between Protestants and Catholics is far from over. School children strolling about everywhere wore uniforms- we heard that just about all Catholics go to catholic schools- possibly same for Protestant, Protestant schools. There is segregation- Catholics live on the West side of the river Foyle while Protestants on the east side. The reasons for this segregation go back to the 1600's where Oliver Cromwell marched in and took over Catholic farmland- the Catholics had 79% of the land, but afterwards only about 29%- the rest was handed over to protestants. The roots are economic not so much religion based.

Took a trip to see the bogside murals , parked up and took a quick walk around , wasn’t really that happy leaving my car in the area , many youths hanging about piling up tyres for upcoming bonfire and people hanging about , took a few pics and left the area .
The free Derry wall is just a wall with a yellow flag flying above , nothing special to see just as easy use google street view
