This is a very tall war monument well sited in a town square where straight streets go off in four directions. As you approach that means you can see it from a distance.
The winged female figure at the top of its tower is in the precarious situation of standing on a sphere, while also treading on a snake wriggling around that ball. She's a figure of victory, holding a laurel wreath high in one hand, and a sword in the other. Presumably the snake is the hideous enemy, put in its place. Below on either side are two other statues. A sailor is shown oddly barefoot, the soldier counterpart on the other side is about to stab someone (not present) below with his bayonet. It is a very aggressive moment to cast in bronze.
There is some discolouration of the stone, from live green growths and stains from the bronze. I'm conflicted about whether that adds to the look of this old artwork, or if it would look better with a good clean.
That's the technical description. Its big, its visible, is impossible to ignore, and that was the aim. When I was there election posters for all sorts of political parties were high on every post in the square. There is a road all around the monument, so while the site is central, it is never normally peaceful or quiet.
The War Memorial has two figures, one a fierce sailor and one an infantryman with a fixed bayonet. They are worth a visit. The names of the fallen are recorded on plaques. The memorial is in the centre of the city.
Show more...Centre square memorial. When you read the names of the fallen it makes you realise how some of the families were decimated by the wars. Sad and moving. Imposing memorial.
Show more...This war memorial is located within the city walls in The Diamond - where the four main streets of the walled city met. It is a great meeting point since it is very tall and is easy to find. The memorial itself is beautiful and sobering as it remembers all those who lost their lives fighting wars. It is situated on a fair-sized landscaped square in the centre of The Diamond to allow people to take their time when paying their respects.
Show more...Though I have never served in any of the forces it still seems fitting to remember all the men and women who lost their lives doing just that.
Sometimes it is forgotten that many of them came from Ireland both North and South so please remember them all.
Accessed up the hill within the walled city. It's steep but worth the effort to get up and see this well kept memorial in the middle of the walled city with nice views 360'
Show more...I was impressed by the quality and scale of this three Storey war memorial. It is located in a large square and is a must on a walking tour checklist!
Semper Paratus!
This was once the site of the market place. It stands at the middle of all four entrances (gates) to the walled city.

The beautiful monument to the fallen is on the Diamond in the very heart of the old city up a steep hill from the Guild Hall along Shipquay Street.
Show more...It depicts an infantry soldier fixed for the fray and a sailor at the other side. Above them is an angel atop a column.
It's a beautiful monument and a very fitting commemoration.
