The Fashion Museum Bath left the Assembly Rooms on 30 October 2022. It is in the process of moving to temporary accommodation until a new location in the centre of the city, and purpose-built Fashion Collection Archive are finished.
Show more...A last-minute choice and one I did not regret. I'm not hugely into fashion but was left very much intrigued by how fashion has changed over the years.
The museum is sensibly ordered from the 1600s through to now. There is an audio guide that provides some further information, a bit of trivia too every now and then. Quite fascinating.
There was also, when I visited, an exhibition on shoes and how the styles have changed for different types of wear; again, pretty interesting!
You can easily spend a while here and I chose to.
This museum is in the same building as the Assembly rooms. The exhibit shows dresses and suits from 1700 to the present day, although there are more dresses than suits. There's also a display of shoes through the ages, and a room where you can try on some period clothes. It was very interesting and I would recommend buying tickets in advance. It took us 2 hrs to go round the exhibit, but it's a self guided tour with a very good audio guide, so you can take as long as you want.
Show more...The museum is situated near the circus and the top of Gay Street. It’s quite a walk up hill, so we’re comfy shoes!
We were greeted by a friendly and helpful young lady. I didn’t realise masks were compulsory so we didn’t bring them but they had free ones available.
We were offered free audio sticks, which was a nice touch so we could hear more information about the clothing.
The museum is clean but the main exhibition is downstairs. It’s well presented and has clothing dated back to the 1700’s. Shoephoria was my personal favourite - every kind of shoe you can imagine!
They went up to modern day with their clothing, it’s a shame there was such a small part but I suppose it will gradually grow over time. Overall, you could easily spend an hour hear and it’s well worth the £9.50.
I would highly recommend visiting the Fashion Museum. For me it was the high light of my time in Bath. The exhibition changes regularly . It is well laid out with beautiful examples of item like gloves. Lots of shoes. A good over view of mostly British clothes from c19 to the present day finishing with a dress worn by a Kardashian.
There is a really good book selection mixed in with nice in expensive scarves and jewellery.
From there we walked about the Assembly Rooms which were lovely. Lot is unexpected fine detailed decoration, fine stone carving, mirrors and chandeliers. There was a tea room at the end of the Assembly Rooms but we did not try it.
Exhibits UK (English mostly I think) fashion from the 1600s to the present day. Mostly costumes worn by the wealthy, upper or middle classes. We turned up without booking and it didn’t seem busy even though it was late August.
You can use a free audio guide but the little information boards at the bottom of each showcase provide good explanations without overwhelming you. At the end, I bought a guidebook for only £3 (2022) that reproduced some of that information, illustrated by a good selection of the garments, so that was a good value souvenir.
I was with a child in their early teens with a shorter attention span than mine so we were only there for 45 minutes but I reckon I could have spent another half hour there.
My wife and I visited the Fashion Museum in Bath in December. They have a great collection of clothing and associated items that date back to the 1700s. The museum displays the private collection of a famous fashion designer. We both thought it was very interesting.
Show more...Loads of outfits from different periods. Great audio to follow or simply read the descriptions, however the best bit has to be the dressing up sectionsuch a laugh. On-site cafe was great for a brew and very quiet when we visited.
Show more...Good value for money with lots to see. The assembly rooms are beautiful, we looked at these before going down to the fashion museum itself.
The exhibition feature more than 100 items of fashion clothing from the 1600s through to modern day.
We loved the "Shoephoria" exhibition which featured really diverse items including prostheses.
Good value for money and something to interest everyone.
I bought a saver ticket for the Roman baths, art gallery and fashion museum, and enjoying the fashion museum a lot more than I thought I would. The audio guide gives you a good overview of how fashion has changed since the 1700s. they have a good collection of clothes, shoes and accessories from the ages. Would be nice to see a bit more of it on display.

This museum is small, but good for an hour or so. The historic costumes were beautiful, and it was interesting to see costumes of the year 'in the flesh' with all the detail that is lost in photographs. I really enjoyed seeing some Chinese visitors trying on and photographing period dresses, they marched past all the exhibitions straight to the dressing up room- go with a friend and do this and you will have a great time pretending to be Mrs Bennet or Jane Austen!
