This mosque stands outside the city walls at the location where Hz Eyyubu El-Ensari, a noted Islamic individual, died in the assault on Constantinople in 670 AD.

Eyup was the first place I visited in my 3W staying, I then went back because I felt good being there.
The mosque, of course, expecially the Mausoleum, the square, the cemetery on the hill to Pierre Loti: once you are here don't stop at the first level, go up to the second terrace that has a better view on the Golden Horn.
You can find tourists mainly around the mosque and at the famous Cafè Loti, I had the possibility to chat with nice people, despite great difficulties with the languages, as they don't see many foreigners wandering about.

This was such a surprise! The guide I was with suggested that we stopped by. Unfortunately it was at the very beginning of my trip so I did not immediately grab how unique this was. Walking through the cemetery was also very interesting on its own terms.

Bottom line: visit Hagia Sophia first and then come here. You’ll be wowed!

I went here after my full day tour of Istanbul in order to visit the tomb of Hadhrat Abu Ansari PBUH, a companion of the Holy Prophet Muhammad PBUH. It was an honour to go and make dua for him & pay my respects to him, and also pray inside of the Eyup Sultan Mosque for the rest of my family and friends. It was an honour to experience the calmness and sheer light of his piety and bravery as the noble companion of Nabi Muhammed SAW. The Mosque itself was an architectural marvel just like every other Mosque in Istanbul and in Turkey as a whole.

Such a tranquil place to visit. The mosque area is beautiful and felt very spiritual.
There are lots of shops & eateries nearby so you can make a day of it.
Prices are cheaper than other tourist areas.
Make sure to ride the cable car up to Pierre Lotti- a beautiful viewpoint with views for miles.

We took a taxi from our hotel in Sultanahmet for a out 40TL. We heard the mesmerising call to prayer on our way in with Beautiful water fountains outside. It was good to pay my respect to the companion of the Prophet muhammad pbuh.
Outside there are cheap markers and plenty if places to eat. We loved this place and the surroundings.

Apart from the beauty and historic importance of this mosque, we were most impressed by the awe and faith of the believers praying in front of Eyüp's tomb. Also: Do not forget to visit the mosque on the other side of the courtyard. It's elegant!

The mosque was built later but the location originally serves as the grave of Abu Ayub Al-Ansari. This is a place to visit simply to give salam and pray for the soul of a companion of the Prophet Mohammed (Peace be upon him). The mosque is of course lovely to see and the area outside the mosque which is enclosed by the mosque on one side and the bazaar on the other side is very nice.

Why is this town not listed as a must-visit place in Istanbul? Although the Eyup mosque is highly reccommended place to visit but nobody ever reviewed about the town on tripadvisor.

There are so much more Eyup can offer than just visiting the mosque.

This town probably has not been explored much by the tourists except the cemetery part, Pierre Loti cafe and the mosque.

We accidentally chanced upon this town just a few kilometres away from Sultanahmet and Taksim square. I am going to give you a few good insights and tips about visiting the town as well as the mosque.

Tip 1: how to get there? Take a local bus number 99 from Eminonu. It cost 2 - 3 Tl (lira) per person. The ride is about 20 minutes and make sure you stop a few stops after you past the second bridge. You will need to gauge it yourself unless you have a smart phone. Don't bother taking the ferry, taking a bus is so much easier and faster.

Tip 2: if you want to see the mosque, get there in the morning because the crowd seems build up in the afternoon. We went there on a sunday.

Tip 3: there are also a lot of old sultans' tombs along the way to the mosque and you are allowed to enter for free but make sure you take off your shoes to enter the shrine.

Tip 4: start the cemetery walking trail near the mosque where shops were selling muslim robes and holy books.

Tip 5: Since this is a place that attracts pilgrimage, there is of course a shopping street too. Do not miss out on the famous savoury pastry, Turkish Borek, that is sold in the shops (See picture). Out of so many Borek shops, we chanced upon this quaint little small borek shop which sells Borek for 1.25 TL per 100 gram if i am not wrong. You cannot miss it!

Tip 6: while we were walking around the cemetery area, we also found out there is a huge local market at the hilly side of the town. It is very difficult to find but if you found it, you will not regret it. You can see the everyday life of the locals here especialy the hustles and bustles. If i could give you an exact location, then it would be near the Pierre Loti cafe. See picture. Also you can find the cheapest kebab here for only 2 Tl to 4 Tl.

Tip 7: you can forget about going to the Pierre Loti cafe because if you did the cemetery walking trail, you can literally see the Golden Horn from the cemetery.

Tip 8: just so you know, the traffic from Eyup to town (sultanahmet or taksim) will be quite bad because the turkish seemed to come out after 3pm during the day. make sure you plan your time ahead if you are heading to the airport.
