Perhaps the most important agreement in the establishmgent of republic of turkey was signed here, but one gets surprised to see the place a bit neglected. There are about a hundred old houses left from old mudanya town. The new town has nothing interesting, just hundreds of ugly apartment buildings. But fifteen minytes away there is a fishing village called trilye, has a church mosque, nice place for an hours visit.

Show more...Mudanya Armistice House (Turkish: Mudanya mütareke Evi) is on Oniki Eylül Cad. facing the Marmara Sea in the old part of town. This 19th century wooden house is where the Armistice of Mudanya was signed on 11 October 1922 after the Turkish War of Independence. The white building is in Turkish architectural style (projecting upper floor with lattice grills for ventilation) and has been preserved a museum. The signature room on the ground floor portrays appropriately-dressed mannequins representing the Allied signatories (France, Britain and Italy) and Turkey gathered around a table as they signed the armistice. After years of war, all lands in Europe east of the city of Edirne became part of the new republic. The upper floor contains the living quarters of the Turkish delegation (İsmet İnönü, Asım Gündüz and others). Of note is a marble table which was cracked by İsmet İnönü when he struck it during a heated discussion. Interpretive signage in the museum is in Turkish and English, and there are many historic pictures. The museum is open Tues to Sun 8 am to 5pm, with an entry fee of 5TL for adults. Across from the museum is a small square ringed by older houses with a statue commemorating the armistice (Mütareke aniti) in the center.

Short story:
Mudanya Armistice Museum Rooms
The Delegates’ Chamber
This room was Ismet Pasha and the Turkish delegation’s consultation room. It was in this room that they met to discuss the issues and proposals of the day. Telegrams to and from Mustafa Kemal were also analysed in this room. The proceedings and decisions of this room were of major significance in terms of the resolution of the Eastern Thrace and Bosphorus issues. It was here that General Harington, with his interpreter Colonel Heywood, hammered out a deal with Ismet Pasha and Asım Gündüz over the issue of the Straits, and where Harington informed Ismet Pasha in all sincerity that Britain truly desired peace. Ismet Pasha studied the proceedings of the conference here and noticed that the text of the proceedings submitted to the Turkish delegation differed from the actual decisions made during the talks, in particular over the issues of Eastern Thrace and the district of Karaağaç being handed over to the Turks. It was here that these discrepancies were discussed with General Harington and the final version of the agreement – the one that was eventually signed – drawn up.
The talks reached a deadlock between the 6th and 9th of October. It was during this period that Ismet İnönü brought his fist down in anger on the mirrored table to your right and cracked its marble surface. In his anger, İnönü swore that the Turkish armed forces would remobilise and that the Turkish nation would fight for their freedom until the very last man. This show of resolve shattered the pressure the Allied forces had been applying to the Turkish delegation and led to their acceptance of the Turkish demands.
The importance of this treaty is before turkish Republic established (29 Oct 1923) England (British), France and Italy members accepted Great National Assembly of Turkey (before being Turkish Republic)

There are buses/minibuses from Bursa, about half hour drive.

This museum has a very special meaning for Turks as this is the house where the first legal step towards our independence was taken. Therefore, it’s more than the furnitures and the view that visitors focus here.
Show more...Having said that, it’s worth emphasizing that the house and the furnitures and accessories are well preserved. Written explanations guide visitors through the negotiations which took place here, so even if you don’t have prior knowledge about the events you still can get the overall idea.
Museum card is valid here.
