Saltburn Cliff Tramway

788 Reviews

Sadly, because of fire and smoke damage to the lower station we will be temporarily closed until repairs are completed. We will update this page as things progress. Saltburn Cliff Tramway is the oldest water balanced funicular in the UK and the second oldest of its kind in the world. It was voted the best seaside attraction in the UK on 11th of September 2023 in the first ever Seaside heritage network Bucket and Spade List. We allow most wheelchairs etc. We advise that people contact the Tramway before travelling long distances to avoid disappointment.

Went to Saltburn just to ride down the hill and take photos of the magnificent pier. Steve and Garry gave us a full history; talked us through how it worked, the engine design pics on the wall, showed us all the engine room. The story of when the pier was three times longer and people disembarking from the ship were greeted by a brass band - worth the fee just for that story. Great visit, thanks fellas. 😊

First time on the Saltburn Cliff Tramway and we enjoyed our ride back upto the top. The tramway is lovely inside and not too many people get squished in which was great. Reasonably priced.
Prices were :-
Adults: £1.50
Children (aged 4 – 16): £1.00
Children 4 and under: Free
Family Ticket (2 adults and 3 children or 1 adult and 4 children): £4.50
Dogs also travel free.
We would definitely use this again on our return to Saltburn.

We used it in the late summer last year.

It's a great little ride, giving some good views. the queues can be a little busy at the end of a sunny day. But do you know what, its saves the walk up the hill and you get some good views.

Just make sure you get a ice cream to eat while you wait.

Great little Tramway best wishes for next season.

The Saltburn cliff tramway has to be one of the finest sights in Saltburn. Steeped ( sorry for the pun!) in history, unfortunately at this moment in time the trams are redundant due to the pandemic. Even so, it’s still worth visiting and having a read up on the journey through time that these wonderful trams have taken!

I loved the bright stained glass windows of the cabin and the woodwork. It was a gorgeous sunny day so beautiful views and lovely and airy inside.

Just a short journey at a couple of minutes each way, but it does save you having to climb all those steps too!

Considering it was mid-week (thursday morning) I was surprised that there were other groups with us inside the tramway both times (up and down), so it is deservedly popular.

We thought it to be good value too at £1.60 per adult for a single journey. Our toddler was free of charge, even though her pram took up 1 third of the small cabin! Dogs are free of charge too. Tickets are bought at the bottom of the hill, so either before or after journey.

The whole experience was brilliant. The Tramway is beautifully maintained. The people working on the tramlift are well dressed for the occasion and give lots of relevant information. It really is a super experience and well worth making the journey to Saltburn.

A living piece of history that is run by personable and cheerful staff! For only £1.60 a person, the tramway is a unique and quaint experience that shouldn’t be missed. The beautiful, water-balanced carriages slowly ascend and descend a gradient of 71%, either carrying visitors up to the town or down to the bustling beach. Initially I thought the tramway would be a very relaxing way to climb the steep hill, but I was so worried about the system breaking that I didn’t have much time to relax in the end! Thankfully, the system did not break and we made our way back down to the beach on foot.

Looks good. A great bit of history. Must have walked up the steps 6/7 times over 4 days. We tried to use it once. The first time it was 5.45pm and they were not letting anyone else join the queue. I heard somewhere it closes at 5pm. The second time the queue wasn’t going down. It’s great for people that can’t walk the steps, disabled, prams etc.

This is definitely an easy way to get from the beach to the town! The funicular tramway is water-powered and, apparently, could keep going during power cuts in its early days. This is no longer possible because of the introduction of various Health and Safety measures. Look for the big wheel at the top that controls the braking. You can also see steps between the tracks that are presumably used by passengers if the tramway has to stop part way up/down because of a power cut.

Although I live locally , I had not been on the tramway for a number of years.
This is a fantastic example of Victorian Engineering.
I was here to do a video for my YouTube channel (TheTeessideTraveller) and the gentleman in charge - Trevor , kindly did a piece to camera explaining the history and how the tramway works.
I was not able to use all of the footage due to time constraints, but Trevor went into a lot of detail and I found it fascinating!
I cannot recommend this wonderful tram highly enough and this is a Must Do thing when visiting Saltburn By The Sea.
