We called here to pay our respects to the young men that lost their lives in the troubles, it is one of the most beautiful places in the world and seems like it must be one of lifes sick jokes that such a tragedy occured here, we couldn't look round the old keep as it was closed, but it was still worth going to look around the area,
Show more...Built to guard the narrowest point on Carlingford Lough, this keep is impressive. in wonderful condition. Unusual to other keeps of the time, it has a staircase that leads up the edge of the castle (long and straight within the walls, as opposed to the usual spiral staircases in most castles of the era.
In 2007 you had access to 3 floors and the roof, sadly in 2014 it is just the 3 floors and NO roof access is permitted- which truly is disappointing as you got stunning views up and down the lough and could take photos without dirty windows! There is a gorgeous round tower on huge Warrenpoint side across the water.
The ground floor has cobblestone flooring, first floor has corbelled roof and the second floor has the extra little rooms in huge walls (gardarobe, closet etc)
This is a free site to enter (providing the caretaker is there to open up) sadly however due to lack of funding, it is to close early this summer (2014) due to budget restrictions in place.
Built by High De Lacy it was occupied by the Magennis family (Hugh Magennis, Chief of the Mournes) in 1580.
We have visited a few times and would recommend.
There is a good sized layby next to the fort and very good information board outside it. The fort is well preserved with a good exterior wall and the main keep inside. There is a round monastic style tower on the opposite bank and it is a lovely setting.

There is also now a nice place to narrow park from the roundabout to the memorial scene. After that is the actual Narrow Water castle. Seldom open I have found.
So many memories in this area just outside Warrenpoint. Worth a visit.
Narrow Water Castle is right opposite this keep and the castle is also worth a visit. This is the mini castle on the river. Excellent!

Show more...This is a super historical tower. It's great for use as a picture back drop, which is what I did today. Hope they build the bridge here.
Lovely place. The castle is absolutely stunningwords cannot describe it. The keep isn't so stunning, but looks perfect beside the lough. Really enjoyed!
Show more...I accompanied a group of nursery school pupils on an outing here which fitted in well with their curricular theme of castles. We only visited the ground and first floors and it was great to see inside this iconic building.

as other reviews have said the inside of the keep is dull and empty, but still something every local will have done at least once. This being said this is what you first see when driving into Warrenpoint with the lough and Mourne and Cooley Mountains in the background. It is a beautiful fusion of Man and Nature. A sight everyone should see.
