Central Tramway is Scarborough’s Victorian cliff railway on the historic South Bay. Opened in 1881 the company carries 500,000 passengers a year and is preserving the heritage of the site for future generations.
Show more...We spent a few days in Scarborough after the New Year and whilst walking on the south side we came across this lift taking us from the sea front up to the town centre level where all the shops are. It’s a simple, quick way to make the journey. It costs £1 each way and it’s great that this historic equipment is still fully functional!
Show more...We had a nice ride up the tramway. It was around £1.20 each (children under 5 free). The doors into the tram were wide so it was easy to get in. The trip was short but enjoyable. There were books for sale about the history of the tramway and when I got home I wished i'd bought some so I emailed them. They told me where to buy the books online and even gave me a postage discount as I bought a few. Great service!
Show more...Love that this is still running. Built in 1881 it's old world charm saves you walking down the thousands of steps to the front. A £1 up and a £1 back is cheap. I'd have paid double.
You cannot come to Scarborough without doing this.
I work in public transport and have a soft spot for anything like this. Sitting in these well maintained tram carriages was amazing. It was like slipping back in time to pure Victorian decadence. The pure detail of the Victorian built system from the old turnstile entrance to the platform and carriage detail was a pure pleasure. We used it several times and I loved it.
Show more...This was a nice way of avoiding a long flight of steps down to the beach for me when visiting Scarborough. The funicular only costs 1 GBP and is situated right next to The Grand hotel. A classic, authentic historic stop-off.
Show more...Thoroughly enjoyed my trips on this amazing facility. As someone with walking issues I couldn't of managed the steps up or down. I was amazed at how cheap this ride was as it must be very expensive to maintain this amazing Victorian machinery. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend having a ride on this tram to support them if nothing else.
Show more...It was built in 1881 and is one of the oldest cliff railways in the UK. A single fare costs £1.20. We used it as a quick way to get to the top so we could get to the shops. We didn't fancy the steep walk upwards. It’s ideal for going down to visit the amenities on the beach front too. The staff are friendly too. It has a great bit of history and it's a must do.
Show more...Creative and entrprising idea to convert the carriages of this old funicular railway into a small cafe. A contrast to the the more intimate setting of the ubiquitous tea room or coffee shop. Could do with some information boards and photos to show the history and liven up the very plain interior. Good views of the seafront from the front 'carriages'.
Show more...Apparently built in 1881 and one of the oldest cliff side railway systems in the UK. A single fare costs £1.20 and, considering you’re only on it for about 60 seconds, it's perhaps a little expensive but there you go. We used it as a quick way to get to the top.

This Tramway is a charming little piece of the past perfectly preserved to allow it to continue to be enjoyed by visitors to Scarborough so many years after it was first opened. It is a god send for those who don't feel able to tackle the mountainous terrain up from the seafront area in to the town. Reasonably priced at 1.30 per adult for an uphill journey, when you consider this money helps to keep it maintained and running in such wonderful condition.
