Wonderful sights delight walkers at every turn in this culturally rich and charming part of Lisbon, which through its architecture reminds visitors of its Visigothic roots, Arabic influence and fishing port heritage.

There are plenty of nice shops to see along the way and you need to make sure you have time to get lost as there are quite a few twists and turns during this walk. The sights are quite beautiful and there are a good 5 viewpoints to see (if you have the time to keep climbing)! We chose to start at the bottom (ie. at sea level) and each was picturesque in its own way.

Be aware of tourist traps - we did have individuals try to sell us things. They would approach you and be extremely friendly. Before you know it, they have "gifted" you a bracelet and are asking you to go to an ATM to give them money for food etc.

This is a beautiful neighborhood to stay in if you want a peaceful night. During the day and evening you have access to many local places to visit, cafes and restaurants. Great view points.

Just know that you'll have to walk and it is hilly so be prepared and have comfortable walking shoes.

Uber is very cheap so use it every time you're going to a place that is uphill, then you can do easy downhill walking coming back.

Take an Uber, which is cheap in Lisbon, directly to the highest point in Alfama which is the castle. From there everything is downhill which is much easier than walking up the steep city streets.

Make sure you see the mural about Portugal as it gives the history of the country.

Get off the main drag & walk the side streets to see how people live.

Go to the outstanding overlook of the city & the Tagus river for terrific views

We absolutely loved walking around here except for the steep streets so be prepared.

Lots of shops & restaurants.

Go into the cathedral.

Soak in the marvelous atmosphere. We really loved wandering around here.

Do your tourist shopping here as there is lots of stores to shop in.

My wife and I had the pleasure of walking through this charming neighborhood during our time in Lisbon. The older, mostly narrow streets are bordered by colorful buildings which created a community that was distinct from other communities of Lisbon that we visited. This is a great place to walk around and also has a nice selection of restaurants and cafes where visitors can enjoy a leisurely dinner with great views of this beautiful neighborhood.

Alfama is packed with restaurants, bars, and shops. It's a great place to take in live Fado entertainment. The Alfama Cellar Restaurant is FABulous - small with great staff and absolutely delicious cuisines and a good selection of wine. We were able to see live Fado right down the street from the Alfama Cellar (a place that they recommended) and so it was a perfect evening in the Alfama area of Lisbon.

Alfama is a labyrinth of cobbled streets, winding alleys, vertiginous stairs and tiled houses. It’s very picturesque in places, a little ramshackle in others, sometimes both at once. And for all its nooks and crannies, it has some big landmarks too. The castle is well worth a visit, mainly for the views it offers across Lisbon and the Tagus, and the Panteão’s striking white dome stands out against the blue skies.

This neighborhood is packed with thousands of years of Lisbon history, and it's very authentic. Restaurants operate out of nooks and crannies. Apartments are in buildings that date back to the Moors. It sometimes feels a little bit like Toledo, Spain. Sadly, many locals have been priced out of this area, but it's still an incredible part of the city to visit. It's quite a hike up, but one of our favorites!

A lovely area of Lisbon. Lots of cafes and bars. Taylor's port is here and you can visit and taste. Fado museum is here and loads of musicians busking in the small squares. Lovely to sit in the sun and people watch

A charming and delightful district of central Lisbon, full of history and culture. The wide squares (Rossio and Comercio) gives the city centre and spacious feel. The views from St George's Castle are tremendous. Perhaps the highlight though was the charming tram ride. The old, quaint trams are a delight - route number 28 is very popular and crowded as a result. A preferable alternative is the number 12 route which is a 15 minute round trip through the narrow and undulating streets

Alfama is an area for the fit who can climb steps and steep hills to reach along winding paths and pavements. At each turn there is a point of interest or view. This is the old area of Lisbon where the fishermen and mariners lived. Nowadays, as well as beautiful churches, squares and terraces there are cafés, small shops and restaurants. In January Alfama is a quiet area to stay and visit.
The Saint Apolina train and metro station connect via train to the airport while tram 28 from halfway up Alfama connects with the city centre with a must-do-ride. At Santa Apolina station (inside) there is an useful supermarket.
