Walking along the riverfront of the River Lune in Lancaster at night heading to The George & Dragon Pub and The Wagon & Horses Pub I came across this memorial/ monument, couldn't find much information so the next morning before going out I did a quick bit of Googling and found out what it was which proved to be very interesting and informative .
The monument titled Captured Africans Memorial ,the work of artist Kevin Dalton Johnson ,highlights the part Lancaster played in the Transatlantic Slave Trade ,the reviled trafficking of human cargo for sale that lasted for 300 years ,Lancaster as a town developed into a significant British trading port from the 1700's onwards ,between 1750 and 1790 alone 200 slave ships sailed from Lancaster with the sole intention of transporting enslaved people back to Europe and the America's ,indeed Lancaster merchants grew rich in this most repulsive of trades ,a true crime against mankind,it's a very clever memorial ,the different plinths represent a slave ship ,bottom plinth slaves while the other plinths represent other commodities such ships would carry such as sugar, rum ,mahogany and cotton ,I found the memorial poignant ,fascinating ,informative and thought provoking ,I was aware of the part my home town of Liverpool played in this repulsive trade but was totally ignorant of the part Lancaster played in the slave trade,it's a memorial you should definitely check out if your near Damside Street by the River Lune.
