Superb hidden gem in Deptford/Greenwich area that is worth going out of your way to attend. Superb selection of beers, cool crowd inside and out. Just as likel to be sitting beside someones Granda, a Student or a Family and that is a compliment. Great Roast on a Sunday for £10, music sessions outside in a superb roadside seating area. Fantastic Irish charm.

Excellent pub, deserves recognition! Had a lovely roast dinner at a very competitive price for what else is available in the area. The outside seating is lovely, and what I assume was the manager was very friendly and accommodating and proceeded to poor the “perfect serve” Guinness, every time and then delivered it to our table. Excellent.

Went there a week after they could reopen. Everything was prepared very well. They even offer breakfast. They have a great selection of Beers on tap. Guest Ales, Craft Beer, Lagers. There is a beer for everyone. We also had lunch which included a Veggie Roast and Chili. Both good and not too expensive. Staff was super friendly and attentive. It is a bit of a hidden gem in my opinion. All together a very nice old traditional pub mainly for locals. Brilliant.

Often cycled passed this attractive-looking pub on our riverside bike trips and noticed how hard they seem to have worked to keep going through the pandemic. Today went in for a beer and some food. It was excellent. Great food and an excellent selection of ales. Comfy and unpretentious. Will certainly be going back!

I visited this establishment on 13/09/14 with my son (3), Mother (61) & Nan (94) expecting a quick & quiet Birthday drink for my Nan.

After an hour convincing my Nan (who has dementia, is nearly deaf & registered partially blind) that she would enjoy herself once we got there-it's her local. Just a few hundred metres from her front door-she agreed & we slowly & painfully made our way over to the Dog & Bell.

Nan found it a huge struggle walking there & was incredibly relieved when we made it over the threshold & got seated at a table.

I knew we were being stated at by the locals, but dismissed it as possibly kind emphatic glances at my Nan struggling to slide into the bench.

My mother went to the bar to enquire if card payments were accepted. She was met with complete hostility. An aggressive & quite frankly scary looking barmaid instructed Mum to "Speak to Charlie, 'cos I can't serve ya" Mum asked 'Charlie' why & explained it was Nan's special day & we would only like 1 drink to celebrate this.
Charlie refused eye contact with Mum, but growled "Read the sign!"
Once again, Mum explained that we missed the sign as we were watching Nan's footsteps over the threshold & could we just please let her have 1 drink & then we'll go.
Charlie continued to sit with his back to my Mum growling "No. It's not in my insurance"
Mum clarified "So we have to leave right?"
Charlie nodded. Once again refusing the dignity of eye contact with Mum.

I found this whole episode upsetting. My Nan, born & bred in SE8-for almost a century, refused a drink in her local. They should've felt privileged to have such a (once upon a time) well known Deptford face in their establishment.

And I found it upsetting to watch my Mum pleading to the back of a (horribly overweight) Nan's head.

Thankfully kindness, warmth & hospitality was on tap in The British Oak SE3. A place that always welcomes families. Just a shame we had to take my now very confused & distressed Nan out of her own postcode for a drink which was supposed to be local & uncomplicated.

Just a footnote. There is a garden, but not a member of staff of regular offered this as an alternative. They just did not want us in there. A horribly cruel & distressing stunt pulled by a crop of terribly unkind bullies.

Please avoid.

Lovely cold pints on a sunny day! Great looking pub inside, friendly barman, nice tables outside and menu looked good although we did not try this time.
Will definitely return!

Probably one of the nicest pubs along the Thames path and a must to stop and try a craft beer if your walking by. Great vintage decor and good selection of beers.

It's hard to find a good honest boozer but here is one. Terry knows he is sitting on a treasure and should be rightly proud. Great beer, good food and plenty of character and characters.

Great pub tucked away off the beaten track with huge outside tables. Very lively on a Saturday night with a good selection of beers.
