A major public library and archive service in a building with a unique blend of old and new architecture dating back to 1860. It is free and fully accessible to visit and there are excellent facilities throughout. It includes a Tourist Information Centre, cafe, free Wi-Fi and computers, printing, study spaces, bookable meeting rooms, and a roof terrace. There are books for lending, including graphic novels, large print and audio books, language courses, CDs and DVDs. There is a children's library in a transformed historic space with a large collection of books. Free events are put on during school holidays. There are extensive reference collections, some of which are housed in the magnificent circular Picton Reading Room. Special collections and rare books are held in the historic Oak Room and Hornby Library where exhibitions can be seen. Extensive archives from the 13th century onwards are held and family and local history can be researched. There is also a Business and IP Centre.
Show more...Great building and a brilliant mix of old and new, the reading room is spectacular, you can walk all the way round it and go up the iron staircases up to the raised level. The new part is equally as outstanding architecturally and it is great to look up to as you enter the building. The book selection is brilliant and there is a nice cafe on the ground floor, well worth a visit just to look round.

An amazing place to visit. The central staircase is awesome we didn’t go to the top because we wanted to explore the old part of the library. The old books, the size of them, the rooms, the wooden shelving the radiator covers, the decor and the smell of books, we just loved the whole experience.
From the modern to going back so far in time and bringing it all together it’s unbelievable.
Like the Curate's Egg it's good in parts. Wow factor on entering, but the cafe at the entrance is shut up and the library assistant I asked had no idea when it would reopen and wasn't very interested in helping me. She confirmed there was no coffee machine. Unbelievable for such a large library. The fiction area was surprisingly small, the Reading Room superb with a wonderful atmosphere, the Children's Library was vast and unappealing, the 50+ computers in the IT area were being well used, the non-fiction looked well stocked (especially Music) and the Archives floor also looked appealing. The roof terrace was closed to the surprise of the assistant on the floor below who went to find out the reason for this and was told it was because of 'security issues'. Overall this library could do better.
Show more...Despite being a great library, it is shame that such a library located in a multicultural city like Liverpool has canceled the palace that was dedicated to pray, because of COVID-19, till this day. I am a Muslim who is proud of belonging to this marvelous city(Liverpool), I spend hours in the Liverpool Central liberary, I think with good hygiene measurements and safety instructions the praying room could be re-open. I am looking forward to seeing the prayer room open again. Thank you.
Show more...A great t place to read and study and excellent staff; actually it is my best place to study. However, after COVID-19 I don't feel comfortable in the library due to the internal rules and restrictions. Though, the whole country come-back to the normality. The library not yet, the rules such as mask while reading and studying, and no drinks even my water bottle; make me feel unwelcome or that the library management were forced to open it and they are in indirect way forcing me to not staying for long time in the library. I am a big fan of Liverpool Central Library and I wish that they reconsider giving as liberty considering social distance, would be great. Thank you for your understanding.it is not a negative feed-back it is a suggestion from a person who respect and love Liverpool Central Library.
Show more...Library location and set up is amazing and really comfortable unfortunately I do not think the user of library some are not very quiet and the staff is doing nothing about it. I am referring to full grown adults not kids. Why people go to library is well known fact to revise and find peace and quiet to do so.
I was here on Saturday and absolute disgusting as groups of lads is not quiet on top floor and also on second floor there is a person actuslly humming out loud on music ???
I visited the library yesterday with my granddaughter Florence to see a play called The Liver bird . The play was a lovely story a contemporary fairy tale . With a great performance from characters Charlie and Grandma Bailey.
The library has so much to offer and the activities for children were especially good . Florence joined an activity which helped her to create a poem about her cat Billy .
I will be looking out for what’s on next and definitely be paying more visits.
Despite being an excellent library, I cannot give it 5 stars as many people(especially young) who come to chat insisted of studying or reading. you can hear people chatting and laughing throughout the library when walking to find a quiet area to read and study.
I highly recommend the library management to keep one area or floor for such activity and the rest of the library silent areas.
Thank you Liverpool Central Library for all the provided support to the community.

Went to study with a few friends and was spoken to in such a condescending way by a member of staff. Forgot my library card with my PC log in on so went to the desk to ask if there was another way I could use the computers. Staff member was reluctant to help me using a very passive-aggressive tone and expecting me to know he needed to see my ID even though I had gone to the desk to find out a way to gain access?
Show more...My friend was also charging their laptop using a plug for the computer they were sitting at as they could not find any others. The same staff member came over, bent down to eye level and said "You didn't unplug that computer did you", to which they replied "Yes? I couldn't find any plugs to charge my laptop" and the staff member replied "If you actually look, you will find them".
Words don't do this justice for how rude these interactions were on the staff member's part and it left us so annoyed because we had in no way provoked the attitude we received from this staff member. I know we look young but I don't expect to be spoken to like a child, in my 20s. If you don't like people- don't work in a community establishment involving people? Literally will not be returning because of this man.
