When the weather is good Coleraine has so much to offer in the way of walks. There is Mountsandal Fort which is a lovely walk through a forested area. Not a long walk but can be hilly for people with disability. Along the riverside over at the Strand Road there is a lovely walk by the Bann which is flat and not a challenge for serious walkers. Slightly further afield Castlerock and the Bishop's Gate has the most amazing walks. Again not for the physically impaired although if taken gently is pleasant with the aid of a stick. The beaches at Castlerock, Portstewart and Portrush always good. There are also the nearby forests which offer short walks, especially out by Castlerow. Anderson Park in the town is a restful short walk with a plethora of flowers for any age to enjoy.

I had never heard of Mountsandel.
It's a beautiful woodland walk right on the banks of the Bann and tucked away within it is a Mesolithic fort - the earliest known site of human activity in Ireland.
Interpretive boards are dotted along the way to tell you what you're seeing.
Seems to be entirely dog-friendly.
Quite steep in a couple of places but not beyond anyone of average fitness.
Both beautiful and fascinating.

Asking at the Tourist Information in Coleraine about a 'walking tour' we had read about in a brochure a staff member there called the Ulster Scot Resource Centre and made an appointment for us to take the walking tour. For a nominal fee we walked through various parts of Coleraine where our guide pointed out such things as the location of the old city ramparts, an old monastery whose location is now only marked by the name of the street, Abbey Street. We passed numerous historic churches and other sites. Mount Sandel was pointed out, the oldest archeological site in Ireland with carbon dating back to 9000 B.C. The artefacts from this archeological dig though are in the Belfast Museum. The tour brought the history of Coleraine to life. The Ulster Scot Resource Centre itself where we began the tour is worth a visit. It houses extensive history of the Orange Order and is full of their memorabilia. It was a morning well spent.

have you ever went for a walk along the side of the river bank in coleraine, out to castleroe? Coleraine borough council promote it as a "healthy heart walk" well, let me tell you! It's far from a healthy walk! Especially after a rain shower. Sewage all over the pathway from the old bridge to the far side of the new bridge. Absolutely disgusting to say the least. My wife and I took our husky for a walk along this path last night and the smells and sewage on the pathway was a serious hazard to everyone's health and safety. Come on coleraine council, pull your finger out and get something done about itit's been going on for far to long now.

Coleraine walks and sightseeing is definitely worth a visit! With loads of different ones you'll find something different in each one of them. I did a couple of them around the area while away with work and it felt amazing from the Giants Causeway to the castles by the sea it was quite refreshing.
If you're into history and gorgeous landscape/sightseeing this is definitely worth going to.

We are so lucky here with the availability of places to enjoy walking. Try the one through Mountsandel Forest and enjoy the view from the Norman Motte across the valley and along the River Bann. Lovely in all seasons. Castleroe Forest several walks here and all very enjoyable. Walking along the river between the old Bridge and the Cutts. Opportunity to see lots of wildlife including cormorants, swans, ducks, squirrels, and occasionally harbour seals. Any of the local beaches but I love Benone. Lovely beach to collect shells. or try any of our B class roads and enjoy looking at what is growing in the hedgerows, bird life, farming activities and animals or just enjoy the views and being out in the fresh air. I live locally and enjoy walks all year round. Other walks include walking from Portstewart Promenade along the cliff walk to Portstewart Strand and Back The more energetic may wish to walk along the beach to the Barmouth (mouth of the river Bann ) Or perhaps you would prefer to go to Ballintoy harbour and walk along the coast to Whitepark Bay.

My sister and I discovered a very interesting and historical walking tour that is done through The Ulster Resource Center. A guide led us through the streets of Coleraine telling us the history of Ireland throughout the centuries, a rich and interesting history. This tour is the only one we could find in Coleraine and we highly recommend it to all visitors. There was a small fee and well worth it. The Ulster Resource Center is making a big effort to preserve and promote their history.

Note to the website: I went on this trip with my sister. We are seniors and there is no place to check off below the 'sort of visit' we had. We were there from Canada to explore our Ulster Scot roots in the villages surrounding Coleraine.

Went to the beach at Benone and at castle rock . Beautiful sandy coastline with fantastic views . I couldn't believe I was in Ireland if it hadn't been for the the weather that is! Still can't have it all it is still March.
Really impressed with the gigantic shells on Benone beach just a beautiful place to be. My dogs also loved it although not allowed on the beach from May to September .
Loving the beaches here and the huge selection of scenic walks.
