we visited the market on thursday if you like cheap fake goods like handbags & polo shirts etc its great but prepare yourself to be hassled constantly i mean they are rude and insulting callin people ginger mingers etc! lucky we laughed it of even though were all dark haired, they pick up on wat previous tourists have said to them, mt friend didnt buy something she was lookin at and a man bit her arm , he was jokin a bit but even so its very intimidating, they pull and hall at you and creep up behind you and try to scare you!
we did buy things but if they would of just let us look we would of bought more they are an absoulte nitemare , just a warning ! we did find the odd worker who was fine but they are like a bunch of lions waitin on prey , thats the only way to describe them !
go in the morning time its starts at 9am to about 6pm, and dont be afraid to haggle we some of them were askin for 65 lira for handbags and we were gettin them for 20 lira so they can drop the prices drastically! also they love english money so bring that it works out cheap for things but they dont take english coins!
good luck,
We paid a taxi driver to take us to the market from our hotel, bet he was laughing!! Went straight up the stairs looking forward to some bartering, only to find the place completely empty!!! Both Marmaris and Icmeler markets are just fruit, veg and fish now. No clothes, shoes, bags or trinkets! We were so disappointed!!
Show more...Apparently, the new mayor of the area does not like markets sooo, they have all got the chop..literally , unless you want to buy fruit, veg or meat forget this, get yourselves on a bus to Mugler market goes on forever, and is cheaper than cheap, and you can still barter
Show more...We have just returned from Marmaris, and went to the thursday market. Take a bottle of water with you as it gets stiffling hot and very stuffy with it being indoors. Its VERY VERY busy, so if you have children with you, arrange beforehand where to meet up if you get lost or split up, if you suffer from claustropobia then maybe its not for you.
If you are looking for fake designer clothes then this is the place for you. Radley handbags were 4 for £10 or 25TL, Adidas trainers £10, Adidas Abercrombie, Bench etc hoody tops £12, shoes/sandals 4 for £10. They love English money and can sometimes get a better deal if you pay in sterling. Be prepared to haggle!! The DS games are great. We bought 4, they started off at 50TL EACH but got them all for 100TL these games have over 100 games on them. The stall holders have DS consoles that you can try the games in first. My kids have spent many an hour playing on them and have been great! If you find the price they are asking for too expensive then be prepared to walk away, some of them actually chased us around the market dropping the price with each step. Some can find this very intimidating. If you have kids they will do anything to get your attention, taking off caps, hats or even putting bracelets on childrens wrists telling you to show your parents, then snatch it back off them when you tell them you're not interested! The stall holders are all there to make a living at the end of the day, but be prepared how far they will go to try to get you to buy something. Arms were grabbed, cheeks were pinched, paths were blocked, they all shout above one another so it does get very noisy!. Some stall holders are very rude and snatch money from you, knock into you or barge past you, so be prepared! Most are quite decent and accept a polite "no thanks" others are quite funny, shouting "cheap crap, genuine fake, cheaper than the salvation army, cheaper than asda, cheaper than primark, cheaper than shoplifting", and even one stall holder shouted "cheaper than a p*ki shop" which I found disgusting.
Dont feel forced into buying something you either dont want, or feel is too expensive. One of their tricks is to put the item in a bag that you have shown interest in, then thrust it in your hand demanding the money, telling you to "come on come on".
Never been to Turunc before on our trips to Turkey, but as Marmaris and Icmeler markets have been closed we thought Turunc may have taken their place!!. Monday is market day so as weather was average we decided to give it a try. Boat taxi from Marmaris is very nice (like a little boat trip in itself good value for 15 lira pp), trpi takes about 45 mins and drops off at harbour front of Turunc, anice sleepy little Turkish town, plenty of shops bars and cafes. Market is a 10-5 min walk through back of village and to be honest was a big disappointment, more like the village market than the old Marmaris and Icmeler markets used to be, took about 15 mins to look at everything before walking back to village. This market is NOT the place to do your souvenir. shopping!!!!
Show more...Walked the length of Marmaris but could find no market. Back at the hotel we were told about the new mayor closing it down but have been advised that there is a daily market down by the marina which we are going to look for today.
Show more...This market used to be full of bargains on all the fake designer clothing but nowadays, it only sells fruit and veg. Not worth going now.
Show more...If you enjoy a bit of haggling then you will lap this up. Be careful though and try not to insult the stall owners by starting off at ridiculously low prices. I personally have a rule not to haggle a price tag under 15TL.
One thing to remember is that these traders have to make their money between the beginning of May and end of October every year so a few of them will hassle the hell out of you. My advice is to keep calm and if you don`t want their goods, then a firm yet polite "No Thank You" usually has the desired result.
I have to say that the hassling at this market, the covered market in Marmaris Old Town and with street retailers is a lot less than it used to be, largely due I believe with Turkey`s efforts to enter the EU. They were warned to clean up their act.
However, if you chill out, this market can be one of the best experiences of your life, ALL FOR FREE!
WARNING - beware of tobacco and cigarette pedlars - what you see is usually not what you get!
BARGAINS - the copied perfumes and clothing are brilliant and you can secure some really good bargains.
REMEMBER - This is a local market for the locals. The exotic fruit and vegetables are what "FRESH" is all about.
This is an excellent day out. Also grab a Dolmus to Icmeler on Market Day. It will take a day to go round it all properly. However the Icmeler Market location is very hilly so not really suitable for people with walking difficulties.
There is no market the new mayor has stopped the market!! It is a massive massive shame and a huge disappointment :(( we were truely unhappy about no markets in marmais and İçmeler!!!

We ve been there twice as we re living across.
Show more...First what i would advise - to come with local. Most of people don't speak foreign language, so either you need to explain how much u want in Turkish, or you need to know numbers.
However, variety of fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, cheese and olives is amazing. They also have some meat shops, but we dont have an opportunity to cook so we were looking for smth that may be consumed right after washing.
Prices are low, crowds of locals shopping here is confirmation that the spot worth it.
Peaches, grape and nuts we bought were nice.
Market works since early morning till late evening on Thursday and Sunday. However better to come before noon.
