The Witchery

1904 Reviews

Hidden in a collection of historic buildings at the gates to Edinburgh Castle, James Thomson's Witchery is the most spectacularly atmospheric destination in the city. The stunning decor and legendary food have ensured the Witchery has become a much loved Edinburgh institution. Dine in the rich baroque surroundings of the original oak-panelled Witchery or among the elegant candle-lit charms of the Secret Garden. There are 9 theatrical suites - perfect for those looking to stay in the most indulgent settings. Lavishly decorated, our suites scream romance with a capital R! Whether you stay or dine The Witchery is an unforgettably magical experience.

I had seen so many pictures of The Witchery, since we couldn’t stay there, I wasn’t prepared to miss out on at least a meal here. Built in 1595, The Witchery provides the most atmospheric meal you could ask for. We didn’t have a reservation just plain luck and entered The Secret Garden for lunch. Our service, quality of food and taste of dishes were beyond expectations (which, let’s face it were high upon arrival) We share molasses cured salmon blinis and charcuterie with watermelon 🍉 followed by deer and kale champ and the Witchery seafood pie 🥧 our wine was divine and I’d love to go back for a dinner in the original dining room 🧙‍♀️🥰😋

The food here is absolutely outstanding. Staff are attentive and accommodating. I took a family member for a birthday treat and the staff surprised us with a bottle of Prosecco and a chocolate and fruit platter with a sparkler. Oh...and the wine! Beautiful.

Fabulous dinner, we will definitely return. We had such a lovely evening, food and wine was delicious. The vegan options were lovely, so nice to get different options to other restaurants and an actual dessert rather than just been offered sorbet! Lovely restaurant and our waiter was lovely (Cameron), he made the visit perfect - thank you.

First time at The Witchery and it won't be the last. Thoroughly enjoyed the food and the surroundings. Very good service from the staff. We were early for our table (in the Secret Garden Room) but this was not a problem. We will try the Original Room next time.

Wow we stayed in the sempill suite and what an amazing room. Complete with sitting room, kitchen and errr ghosts. Bed was very comfortable and room generally was luxurious. I would have booked directly through the witchery sight if I'd known you get a bottle of bubbly, but because we booked through another site we didn't. However lots of other little touches. Snacks, Nespresso machine, luxury chocolates. We had a continental hamper breakfast which was packed with pastries. Fresh fruit, cheeses and hams.. it was so big there wasn't enough room on the sitting room table. They deliver the hamper and set the table up for your own private breakfast. There is a Dyson hair dryer and.ghd straighteners avalible in the room and a huge TV and an Alexa. The only down side would be the ghost who likes to play around. I was aware it had been reported as haunted but just thought It was a gimmick. I can assure you it isn't. We had a very weird experience! But I'm in to that my husband maybe not! The ghostly experiences started when I noticed the lights in the bathroom flicker slightly. Then later when I fancied a bath myself and husband were in the bathroom talking about the lights flickering then it happened again this time continuously flashing on and off (they were dimmer switches) freaked out we retreated to the bedroom. Later I plucked up the courage and had.my bath and the lights turned off. And I heard footsteps up and down the hall. The same thing happed to my husband. My husband then was woken by footsteps up and down the hall at 4am. His bag then fell off a chair that had been sat in the same position for hours by this point. Then later we both realised the cabinet door where the TV is in had been closed. For the rest of the early hours we heard a lot of banging and footsteps but it felt like it was messing around with us nothing sinister. Anyway if your a paranormal lover then I highly recommend! Had my spirit talker app on my phone too and the sentence that came through straight away was 'i like to play games' which is definitely what we felt! Overall great experience.

Absolutely amazing atmosphere, ambiance, and location. That alone made this worth it. My wife and stopped in for lunch before touring Edinburgh Castle and I wish we had time to go back for dinner. The hospitality was fantastic and the food was amazing. I had the Haggis and Red Deer Wellington and it was fantastic.

Excellent service and very high quality food. High end of what we wanted to pay but worth every penny. I had langoustine and my wife the oyster followed by the red deer and haggis Wellington sharer, just perfect. We drank a bottle of house rose and house red both spot on! Atmosphere and surrounding made it all feel very special.

We had dinner at the Witchery several years ago and always wanted to have a return visit. This time we decided to stay at the Witchery as well as dine there and we are so glad we did. We had two rooms, my husband and I stayed in the Turret Room and our Son stayed in the Library Room. Both rooms were incredible. The details in the decor are simply perfect. The Library Room is in a building across the street and the Turret Room is in the main building. There are quite a few stairs to climb if you do stay in the Turret Room. We ordered the breakfast hampers to be delivered to our rooms the first two mornings and it was a wonderful display of everything we could want. Coffee, tea, juice, pastries, yogurt, cereal and fruit. We could not finish it all. The third morning my Husband and Son went to the Witchery Restaurant to have breakfast and they said it was wonderful. We did eat dinner twice at the Restaurant, the first night in the Secret Garden room and the second night in the main dining room. Both rooms are beautiful, service and food are excellent. Every member of the staff that we encountered was wonderful. We did go to their sister property, Prestonfield for dinner one evening and that was a wonderful experience as well. The property is beautiful and the meal memorable. I would not hesitate to stay at the Witchery again. The rooms are simply magical. We did not want to leave.

I celebrate each passing year here. It takes the sting out of my decline into decrepitude that each birthday marks. Everything is excellent, and everyone should spend at least one night of their lives luxuriating in the experience that is The Witchery.

Wow - absolutely breath taking. We stayed here for two nights for my 30th birthday and had the most incredible time. We stayed in the Old Rectory and every detail was absolutely perfect. The room was so beautiful with so much going on but absolutely spotlessly clean. It was an amazing experience. We ate breakfast on two days and had dinner on one day and wow, what can I say! The food was incredible and all the members of staff were so lovely and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The location is incredible and really set the bar high for my first trip to Edinburgh!
