Quite disappointed with our stay. My room smelt really bad, turns out it was the pillows. I had to take them out of the room. Only one curtain at my window and the en suite drain probably needed cleaning. Staff were nice but unable to help with anything.

A wonderful building, helpful staff, good food – but beware of the bar! The prices are outrageous: a single measure of a single malt whisky costs £16. It’s perfectly possible to buy a whole bottle of the same whisky for about twice that. Also the only price list is on the wall at the far side of the room, somewhat obscured by a large vase of leaves/feathers. If you avoid the bar it’s a lovely place to stay!

My boyfriend and I stayed for one night on Saturday 10th February, it was our first time visiting the hotel. We arrived around 1.45pm, nowhere to park so we parked 5 minutes walk away near the races. On arrival the receptionist was extremely friendly, we were informed we had a free upgrade to a deluxe room and we stayed in room 200. The room was lovely, really spacious, had a super king size bed which I was chuffed about as we have one as home so that made my day. The bed was extremely comfortable and I had a great night sleep. The bathroom was stunning and the shower was great. Not sure if it was be because the room was located near the stairs to go back towards reception, but it was quite noisy at times up to about 10pm. The location was great, 20 minutes walk in to York. We didn’t eat at the hotel as we did think £17 each was a bit pricey for breakfast. We did go in to the bar for a drink after returning from a day in York and the bar area was lovely, it was a cold wet night and we got a seat by the open fire which was nice. I’d definitely stay here again and wouldn’t hesitate to book again. The hotel is stunning, friendly staff and great location in to York.

We always stay at elmbank when we come to York. We love the place, but when it comes to the restaurant, bar and service I think you can improve. Having a host to show you to your rooms is a great start to your stay. Or even the front of house showing you to your room if knowone is available. Even my receptionist show people up. It just makes it a touch. Nothing negative. When it comes to your bar and restaurant, we asked for a cocktail menu and we were told you have one and shown it but you don't do them down to stock? We ordered a gin and lemonade and a vodka and lemonade but when asked to be in a gin glass, being told you only have one gin glass? We love the bar setting and think if you have more on offer you will improve on sales. Restaurant is lovely, we love the breakfast and set up but seeing how many people were for breakfast you have to ask yourself why are they not dining in the evening. We had a lovely evening meal, only thing I asked was why was there no cheese board? Brings me on to sales again. You could have gone back in the bar and had cheeses with the upsale of port etc. Remember this is not negative. Its just good feedback and we will always stay with you when we come to York. Do you have a front of house manager or restaurant manager cause in two days we never met anyone who was in charge. I hope this gives you a good feedback and please don't feel negative. Chefs dong good. Housekeeping and receptionist all good just think front of house needs abit refining.

We held a family gathering here to celebrate a significant birthday for my mum. I have to say the staff were absolutely outstanding and could not have been anymore helpful! Communication from the moment we first contacted them was excellent, the room was set out beautifully with white linen and table decorations and we were able to add our own touches to make it a truly magical evening for my mum. The food was absolutely delicious too. Thank you to all the team at Elmbank for making my mum birthday a wonderful occasion!

We booked a dinner bed and breakfast package for a two night stay. The room was beautiful, very clean, warm and good quality furnishings. The food was also delicious. Unfortunately, the customer service and general running of the hotel was not up to standard. We found ourselves repeatedly having to explain the package we had purchased and the options dinning wise we had been instructed on by reception regarding the set menu as opposed to the meal credit to use on the regular menu. This left us feeling uncomfortable and irratated that we had to keep explaining ourselves. Especially after our first meal when we were presented with a bill for a meal we had already purchased within the package booking. Our first breakfast experience was great, we came down within the available hours and were seated right away. Unfortunately the second breakfast left us feeling very uncomfortable. We were asked upon entering the room for breakfast whether we had booked a table. We had not, I should point out at this stage we had been under the impression it was only necessary to prebook dinning for the evening meal, since we had been emailed by reception prior to our stay stating they would like us to select a preferred evening dinning time, to which we promptly responded with our chosen times. There was absolutely no mention of booking breakfast. Despite the dinning room having several empty tables which we can confirm were not filled during our sitting the host made us feel unwelcomed and as though we had caused a huge imposition. We sat down with 30 minutes remaining of the advertised dinning times to a bare buffet, cereals depleated, no orange juice, no fresh pastries, it was very disappointing especially after we asked the staff if a couple of items could be replenished but were met with a very dismissive response. Further to this my partner was unable to order his cooked breakfast of choice as this too was unavailable. Unfortunately the accumulation of the above left us feeling really dissatisfied with our stay. As we checked out we voiced this with the reception desk, but again received a dismissive response. In fact her first response which was quite rude was " I asked you at check in if you had prebooked your meals " I would suggest some customer service training for the staff and a clearer setout/understanding of the packages you have available for your guests because the above really did ruin what should've been a lovely stay at Elmbank

Staff are friendly and go out of their way to help. Hotel is art deco interior and a little shabby in places but this adds to the atmosphere of the place. the location is quiet and within easy 20 min walking of York centre though it’s also on a bus route. Breakfast had plentiful options and they catered for gluten free. Overall I’d go back.

From the moment I entered I was transported into a period drama with all the wonderful original art nouveau décor. Yet the Elmbank has all the comforts and facilities of a modern hotel. Every staff member I encountered was friendly, courteous and helpful. The food was delicious. It is conveniently located to the city centre. I can describe my stay as relaxed and restful….
