Show more...A gem. Very unusual and unique. I heard about Headhunters on "Nationwide" on RTE, and immediately knew I had to visit. How often can get a short back and sides, view a museum, and get all the info on the town in the one venue? And they only charge for the haircut, which is not obligatory. These lads are genuine, the "rail" McCoy!!!
In order to get to Enniskilen, I had to leave home at 7.30am, get 3 busses there, have 3 hours in town, and get 3 buses home, but you know what, I had a great day, well worth the effort. On arrival, I did the museum first, which was unusual, as there were a few men getting their hair cut as I was wandering around with my camera, like a japanese tourist, but nobody minded in the least. I doesn't take long to view the museum, so when I was finished, it was time for a trim.
Nigel had the task of looking after me, and he did a great job. An unassuming gentleman, who seems to really enjoy his work, and enjoys meeting people. He has a tremendous knowledge of the town, and indeed railways, and by the way, gave me the best hair cut I've had in a very long time.
During my visit, it was all men, but Nigel told me that women also frequent, although they might not get their hair done. And the craic was good. Kinda like a male bonding session. They treat all their customers equally here. Apparently, some celebs also frequent.
If I lived in Enniskillen, there would be no other barber I would go to, but even though I live a good distance away, I will definitely return for a trim. friends have already remarked on how good the cut was.
We were doing a self guided tour of Enniskillen (that contained a lot of venues that were closed on a Friday afternoon). One of the final stops we went to was the Headhunters barber shop and railway museum. We weren't really expecting much more than a barber's with maybe a wall containing some old railway signs and the like.
We entered the establishment which was as we thought, then one of the barbers showed us through a door containing two more rooms stuffed with all sorts of interesting memorabilia.
As non railway-enthusiasts we found it very interesting. If you had a strong interest in railways or were of an age where you were familiar with some of the now shut down Northern Irish railway lines, this would be even more fascinating.
One tip would be that if you think the place is shut, persevere. There are a number of doors that look like they are closed or private when you enter the museum. Don't let this put you off. Just push your way through and you'll find this little gem of a place.
If ever a place deserves to be promoted, this is it. Hidden away in Headhunters Barber shop, this museum is packed to the rafters with railway memorabilia from the lost railways of Fermanagh ant the surrounding areas. The railways in Fermanagh were ripped up and the land sold off in the 1950's, never to re open. This museum is a reminder of a bygone era, of interest to young and old alike. And you can get a haircut when you are there as well!
Show more...I nearly missed it because the sign on the street is modest and I would have been raging if I had. What a display of railway stuff! There is a huge variety and a professional museum would have the space and expertise to set it out better, but would not have the friendly input of the people who set it up. I enjoyed the crack with the barber and that was as enjoyable as the exhibits. I didn't get my hair cut, but was pleased to give a donation as it was the right thing to do. An interesting touch was a painting showing modern Northern Ireland Railways DMUs at a reopened Enniskillen station! The Borders Railway is a reality: you never know!
I was taken by the
As soon as turned on the bend in the stairs and got spooked by the Ticket Collector we knew that this was no ordinary museum.
We pressed the button ,heard "All aboard !" and entered the barber shop.Gordon and Nigel, the barbers welcomed us in and said we were free to look around. It was surreal. We walked past a gentleman having his hair cut to view glass cases stuffed with wonderfully preserved railway memorabilia from a bygone age.
The museum is alive. Gordon and Nigel's enthusiasm for their little museum and the history of the local railway company is infectious.
We stayed for an hour , and will be back again.
There is no charge, but we volunteered a donation and were presented with an old railway ticket for a journey from Pettigoe to Enniskillen..third class !
An incredible collection of railway memorabilia from the time where Enniskillen had an active railway station. Hard to find as its located down an alleyway on Darling Street but worth hunting around for it! A cluster of small rooms just off the barbers they are jam packed with lots to look at with various displays giving you the feeling of stepping back in time, you could easily spend a long time reading the various artefacts if were inclined. I am not really into trains but was fascinated by this extensive museum hidden away in such a small space!
Show more...Great way to pass an hour and plenty of model trains for kids . Right in the centre of Enniskillen close to the two main churches. Right beside a brilliant cafe - nice selection of breads.
Show more...My only disappointmnet was that my hair didn't need cutting! This place can be a little hard to find but don't leave Enniskillen without visiting. There are four or five rooms/spaces and stairs full of railway memorabilia with a barber's shop in one part of the museum. It is all cleverly laid out and entrance is by donation - just walk in don't be put off by the working barbers! Obviously they don't have rails or wagons or engines but they do have a huge range of items recalling the important enterprise that the railways were in that part of the world.
Show more...Fantastic museum set up, they have made the most of limited space to present the rich railway heritage of the region in fascinating objects, visual and audio displays, installations and well researched text and exhibitions. A must see if in the area. I didn't need or have time to get a haircut but there was two staff on and about 6 people waiting so I can only imagine they they give fine cuts along with an impressive museum.

Came across this quite by accident and really glad we went in. Loved having a look round the magnificent railway collection and having a chat with the gentlemen barbers. Must go back for a longer visit next time we're in Enniskillen. A real gem!
