Enniskillen Castle, situated beside the River Erne in County Fermanagh, was built almost 600 years ago by Gaelic Maguires. Guarding one of the few passes into Ulster, it was strategically important throughout its history. In the 17th century it became an English garrison fort and later served as part of a military barracks. This historic site houses two museums, Fermanagh County Museum and The Inniskillings Museum and Fermanagh Visitor Information Centre. Opening Hours Monday to Friday (all year round): 9.30am* - 5.00pm Saturdays (all year round): 11.00am - 5.00pm Sundays (Jun to Sept): 11.00am - 5.00pm Bank Holidays - 9:30am* - 5:00pm Closure period - Enniskillen Castle will be closed over the Christmas & New Year holiday period. *9.30am opening for new visitor centre and 10:00am for other buildings Admission
Show more...This museum should absolutely be skipped on Sunday through Wednesday. Despite the vast majority, and by far the best collections (Inniskillings Exhibit) being closed; of course they'll still happily take your money and it's only when you get to locked doors and closed gates that you find out you've been ripped off. Only go on Thursday through Saturday when it's actually open for real, on those days it's a true gem and a must-see. The dishonesty in "pretending" to be open the other days is galling.
Show more...We spent a good couple of hours in the castle and museums, for the princely sum of £4 per head. The way the histories are presented is really interesting and not at all "dusty". We could easily go back next time we are in the area and not run out of interesting features. A real bonus is the staff - Enniskillen seems to specialise in really friendly folks, but this was exemplified in the castle. The chap who was maintaining the spotless cleanliness was also happy to exchange greetings and news. A must if you are in the area.
Show more...We took the tour of the castle it was a shame we were not allowed upstairs in the castle as of Covid but as there were only 6 people in the castle on the tour it could have been easily controlled. We feel there was a lot of interesting things to see upstairs. We were a couple and the other partie was a family of 4 so we were in separate bubbles?? Other than that the grounds were beautiful.
Show more...We visited as covid restrictions were reducing but some areas were not available. Little of the castle itself was available - understandable but unfortunate. There is a range of things to see - a diverse offering. The museum has a range of displays, covering a number of periods. In addition there is exhibition space with both a permanent and temporary exhibits. The castle is in a lovely location being sited on the bend of the river
Show more...Disappointedly the Inniskillings Museum was closed due to Covid restrictions & personally was the only reason I came to visit the Castle having been there in the past.
Some of the exhibits in the Coach House & Heritage Centre were interesting.
Admission £5.
Café & toilets on site.
Ample carparking.
Covid measures in place include wearing of face coverings, hand sanitizing stations, social distancing.
The castle is a museum with exhibits on the history of Enniskillen and the various regiments hailing from this area. Staff are great, the gift shop is small, but what is there is great. The castle also has copious picnic spots by Lough Erne.
Show more...It’s still partly closed but everywhere has these issues at this time so its fine. Lovely welcome from a man called Julian who gave us a history of the castle and town. The displays are well laid out and include some wonderful things of times past. We got 2 cups of tea included after our tour which was very nice indeed.
When we first arrived my husband mentioned that he was interested in doing some fishing locally, upon our return from the tour Julian had a map and guide for us, he had specifically circled areas my husband could go fishing for Pike which was extremely kind.
Spent a couple of hours here this afternoon. Thoroughly enjoyed talking to Julian, lovely lad who is a fount of knowledge about the local area and its history. The displays are very interesting but keep in mind the old castle building is still closed and I believe it contains the military section. Even saw a wedding taking place by chance.
Show more...Beautiful castle with plenty to view. Cafe is exceptional and I’d highly recommend the toasted sandwiches with salad. Excellent food and service from friendly helpful staff. Lovely shop area and plenty of leaflets about local things to do.

Booked our tickets at the castle with the booking staff for the next morning and looked forward to visiting and seeing the displays, mainly the military history of the 2 Inniskilling Regiments. When we met our guide on the morning of the visit he informed us that the main part the keep which houses the military display was closed due to covid and that’s why we had been offered a free coffee/tea to make up for it, surely the booking staff could have told us this when we booked! After a couple of minutes talk by the guide with little info on the history of the castle etc we where then left to walk round the limited rest of the displays on our own.
Show more...I can understand restrictions with covid but it is easily managed with bookings and one group at a time in the keep.
Poorly managed and lack of information is ridiculous.
