It's location – next to an industrial estate in the shadow of a flyover – might not be its best feature, but what keeps guests coming back time and again is the food. The kitchen’s skill lies in extracting maximum flavour from every ingredient, and this is evident in everything from the snacks on arrival to the unique cocktails themed around the five tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami. These five tastes also inform the 10 course menu, where refined, creative dishes feature plenty of playful elements. Produce from their urban garden and greenhouse – including honey from their beehives – is well-used, and one course (’a taste of the garden’), is served in the greenhouse itself. 7 Stylish bedrooms are also available, which provides the perfect excuse to go for one of their wine pairings. Michelin Guide 2022. Chef's Table for up to 6 and a Kitchen Table for 4. Dinner Wednesday to Friday 5pm - 7.30pm. Saturday 1.00pm - 7.45pm. Booking Essential.
Show more...Booked this experience as a treat for my husband. Great start, fire pit outside where we were offered hot chocolate and cookies. The staff were very attentive and friendly. We stayed overnight onsite, the room was fine, could do with a black out blind, a lot of light came through the blinds due to spotlights outside. The food was really disappointing except for when they took us outside to the greenhouse where they cooked pizza in an outdoor pizza oven, best part of the evening. Breakfast was good. Overall I was left feeling very underwhelmed by the food.
Show more...I had booked the experience as a special treat for my partner's birthday, I opted for us to stay on-site in what was promised to be the best suite. The staff are very attentive from the offset, however, their communication seemed very rehearsed rather than genuine. Despite that, the level of professionalism by all the staff was top-notch, unlike the disappointment of the room. Despite booking the most expensive room on-site there had not been a thorough check is done - no toilet paper whatsoever and when we mentioned it to the reception staff were offered no apology, this was not ideal however we can forgive an oversight. What was not forgivable would be the noise from outside the room that kept us up until 1245am - the kitchen service doors were banging constantly making it impossible to get some much-desired rest. Once again, when we mentioned this to the morning reception during checkout there was hardly any apology at all. I was unable to make it for breakfast the next morning because I was contending with a lack of sleep and quite frankly seething at the idea that what was meant to be a special night away felt more like staying at a noisy dormitory - completely ruined. If you are planning on enjoying the delightful culinary experience of the restaurant I cannot recommend it highly enough, but I would steer clear of staying on-site especially if you have more discerning taste than perhaps what they expect. I have never left a negative review but with great reluctance, I am doing so for anybody else like us that wants to avoid disappointment.
Show more...A strange location by a fly over and under huge electricity pylons. The staff were excellent and very attentive. The food was unexceptional whilst dramatically presented and apart from one dish very disappointing. The wine was eye wateringly expensive. It was a very special occasion for us so we booked to stay. The room did not live up to the aspirations of the restaurant. We slept badly due to noise of the lorries on the very nearby road, there was light outside and very shabby poorly fitting blinds did not protect us from it. To describe the room as bijou might be fair. Disappointing to find under the table in our bedroom the rubbish from previous occupants. Impossible to apply makeup as the lighting was difficult. Fresh milk with the good coffee and tea were appreciated . The breakfast was good but overall it was not good value for the very high prices they charged.
Show more...1st visit as a couple, 2nd we took our son, this visit we also included my parents to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary. As there were now 5 in our group we were able to book the Chef’s table. This was an exceptional experience. Being served by the chef responsible for the dish, explaining with pride how it was created & watching Chef Bains working his magic on the pass & serving us personally, was such a treat. We have always been treated like valued guests here rather than customers, the rooms are all amazing & the little touches like treats in the room, amazing quality tea/coffee tray, beautiful toiletries & a gift of fresh baked sourdough rolls to take home, evidence the value placed on visitors. Every member of staff is welcoming, professional & rightly proud to be part of the team. The icing on the cake is the fabulous breakfast. A massive thank you to Chef Bains & the entire workforce for making our wedding anniversary celebration a truly amazing experience.
Show more...I booked this as a gift for my husband; a 2* Michelin taster menu and overnight stay. The room looked great and dinner was really enjoyable (apart from the failure to make the celiac version as good as the 'normal' one on a few courses) but when it came to trying to sleep it was a disaster. The mattress in room 3 has seen better days. Trying to sleep on it left me in so much pain. Managed no more than 1 hour and ended up trying to sleep on the sofa. Add in extremely loud vehicles (like bin lorries with reversing alarms etc) driving past every 30 mins or so and frankly we were ready to go home by 5am. However the gate to the car park was locked and with no-one on the premises we were stuck. Breakfast is served from 8 am (we had reserved for 9.30 am hoping for a lie in!!) so my husband went over then to tell them what was going on and didn't even receive an apology. Will never stay here again.
Show more...Only our second experience of a Michelin starred restaurant and never one holding two stars. We’ve been meaning to book a table for years. As expected the experience is unforgettable from start to finish including the welcome at the door. Each course was full of concentrated flavour it was hard for me to understand how this could be achieved but it was. Each and everyone of the staff we came into contact with were exceptionally proud to be there, full of enthusiasm, knowledgeable, passionate about their job and smiling faces too. Needless to say it doesn’t come cheap but we knew what to expect anyway. Would love to visit again one day.
Show more...The food was about as good as I expected and the service excellent. The staff are wonderful and, though mostly young, manage to blend informality with competence. The food is undeniably excellent, whether it is good value is less obvious. Despite that I'd come back again.
Show more...My partner and I came here expecting the food to be approximately 2 times better than the next best no-Michelin-star restaurants in the midlands area (given that it’s twice as expensive). This was simply not the case. Although the food was excellent, i mean, very very good, there are many restaurants nearby which rival sat bains in terms of taste, quality, presentation, and price. Price is the biggest factor here, with sat bains being priced approximately twice as much as the next best rival. Their competitors are only a Michelin award away from being able to charge similar prices, so they currently represent amazing value for money in comparison to sat bains who, in my opinion, are hugely overpriced considering the standard of their food is just as good as the cheaper places - maybe even not as good because they attempt to explore new avenues of flavour which just don’t work; shiitake mushroom flavoured caramel wrapped in candy floss? What was that all about? Disgusting. Consequently I won’t be returning to sat bains. It’s good, but it’s not THAT good. When you can get the same standard of food, if not better, at other much cheaper places, this is a no brainer.
Show more...The 10 course taster menu was out of this world. The food was amazing! Customer service and attention to detail was phenomenal. Also when offered take the outside garden experience as Pete cooks a mini pizza like bread to try and it’s such a lovely additional experience extra for no extra cost. Couldn’t fault any dishes loved every course and we were full at the end. The whole experience was 3 hours we arrived at 5pm and left at 8.20pm. I had the vegetarian menu that I requested at booking and my partner requested the pescatarian menu and both didn’t disappoint. Well worth a visit and have to book way in advance as we booked back in early January to get a table in March. It was well worth the wait. The tasting menu was £195 each and well worth it. We will definitely return.

This review is just for the hotel, as I will review the restaurant on the page for that. We travelled from Essex for this evening as we saw a special deal of a nights stay, dinner and breakfast at a reduced rate. They offer this deal in the week, but this isn't suitable for us due to work and location, so when we saw this available on a Friday night we snapped it up. We were in room 5, which is a standard double room. You can check in from 3pm, and we did arrive at just after. There was plenty of parking for us. We were greeted very professionally- doors opened for us and a warm welcome. After checking in, they gave us a plate of goodies from the kitchen- lemon curd cookies, RSB Honey nougat and Earl Grey Macarons, as well as a cool drink of earl grey which was beautiful. The staff showed us up to our room. Room 5 is one of only 2 that is actually in the same building as the restaurant, but don't let this put you off, it is not noisy at all. The room had everything that we needed; dressing gown and slider slippers provided, beautiful Aesop toiletries, tea, coffee, milk. It had a beautiful roll-topped bath in the middle of the room which was unique but lovely. We called room service for an iron and board which they brought up promptly. They provided a hair dryer, and interestingly, hair straighteners too! (never seen that in a hotel so had brought my own!). The information guide provided was very informative and told us everything we needed to know. The bed was really comfortable and I had a great nights sleep. Overall it was a really positive experience in the hotel. You can only stay if you are having dinner I believe however. With an incredible wine pairing I would recommend you stay the night if you aren't close by in a cab haha! Breakfast the next day, 2 courses, was equally as stunning as the dinner the night before.
